An incredible adventure
Years ago, I was sitting at my desk with nothing to do. So I said a prayer, “Please God, bring me some adventure. I am so bored.” A few hours later I got a call from one of the producers of The Oprah Winfrey Show. She read my book, How to Heal a Painful Relationship, and said it changed her life. The next thing I knew, I was in Chicago doing a show.
They picked me up in a white limo and took very good care of me. When I got to the studio, I was impressed with how genuinely happy everyone one was. When I asked someone what was going on, he said, “Oprah shows us how.” She created an enviroment where people felt empowered.
The plan was for me to work with several couples the night before we did the show. They would video the sessions and take excerpts that they would play the next day. The plan worked great. I was the only guest, so the entire show consisted of my talking with Oprah, the excerpts, and our interacting with the audience.
They did two shows a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. We started at a certain time, took breaks for commercials, and ended 60 minutes later. The shows were recorded, but in essence, they were live because we couldn’t go back and redo anything.
Both Oprah and I had microphones, but they were just for broadcast. They didn’t amplify the sound in the studio. This created a problem because when Oprah talked with one of the ladies in the audience, I couldn’t hear what the person was saying. The lady asked a long, detailed question. Then, all of a sudden, Oprah turned to me and said, “Bill. What do you think of that.”
I was shocked because I didn’t hear the question and I couldn’t ask her to repeat it. I didn’t know what to do. So I faked an answer. I talked about the experience of love. When I finished, the person thanked me and sat down. I didn’t know it at the time, but my response was the perfect answer for her question. It’s more proof that no matter what the question is, love is always the answer.
My time with Oprah was very special. It was an experience that I will never forget. I was also impressed with Oprah as a person. I could tell by the way she interacted with people that she was very wise. She was also the same person off the camera that she was on the camera. I am glad I got to visit with her and see her in action.
